roject took us to Belper, a charming town in Derbyshire just past Matlock, where we undertook a mix of traditional and modern plastering techniques to achieve a high-quality finish. The job involved applying lath on the timber lintels of the brick window wall, applying a three-coat limework system with materials supplied by Chalk Down Lime, using hardwall gypsum plaster floated and skimmed with multi-finish, and overboarding the ceilings for a seamless result.
For the window wall, which was brick, we applied timber laths to the lintels. This provided a strong key for the plaster while allowing for some movement, making it ideal for heritage and period properties. Once the laths were securely fixed, we applied a three-coat lime plaster system using materials from Chalk Down Lime, ensuring breathability and flexibility—key benefits of lime when working on older buildings. The base coat was a coarse fibred lime mix, followed by a finer float coat, and finally a smooth finishing coat to complete the look. This method not only enhances the durability of the wall but also maintains the aesthetic and structural integrity of the building.
For the other walls, we used hardwall gypsum plaster, an excellent choice for speed and durability. Hardwall provides a tough, impact-resistant surface, making it ideal for modern renovations where traditional lime may not be necessary. Once set, we floated it to a level surface before applying a final skim coat using multi-finish plaster, leaving a smooth, professional finish ready for decoration.
The existing ceilings required overboarding to provide a fresh, even surface. Overboarding is a great solution when the existing ceiling is uneven or at risk of cracking. By fixing new plasterboards over the old surface, we ensured a solid base for plastering. We then applied a skim coat of multi-finish, achieving a flawless finish that will stand the test of time.
