Our latest project took us to Sandbach, where we undertook a mix of traditional and practical plastering techniques to ensure both durability and breathability. The work included overboarding the ceilings, applying a three-coat lime plaster system, strengthening an internal clinker wall with a sand and cement mix, and using special techniques to prevent soot bleed-through.
The ceilings throughout the property required overboarding to provide a fresh, even surface. In the bathroom, we also added insulation to improve heat retention and reduce condensation. The vaulted ceiling added an extra level of complexity, but with careful attention to detail, we achieved a clean and seamless finish ready for decoration.
For the internal clinker wall, we applied a 6:1:1 mix of sand, cement, and lime. This combination was chosen to provide additional strength while maintaining slight breathability and vapour permeability. This balance allows for better moisture management while also ensuring the wall can accommodate fixings without issue.
To prevent soot from bleeding through, we used cow dung—a time-tested solution known for its effectiveness in sealing problematic surfaces. Additionally, we applied hessian scrim in the angles to minimize cracking, ensuring the longevity of the plasterwork.
One of the highlights of this job was our incredibly lovely customer, who went out of their way to show appreciation for our work. They gifted us a Christmas card featuring Sandbach’s loveliest buildings, a thoughtful gesture that made this project even more memorable.
